Help Your Dog Prepare for New Year's Eve 🎆

Updated: May 16, 2024

As New Year’s Eve approaches, all of us here at Cultivated Canine want to make sure you and your family are prepared so we can see all of you back here healthy and safe in 2024! With New Year’s Eve being the day of the year when more furry friends are reported lost than any other, here are a few tips for the days leading up to the holiday:

puppy, fireworks, desensitization, dog

🐾Tire your dog out before any festivities begin with enrichment like puzzle toys and Licki Mats (check out some ideas here on Amazon)

🐾 Be extra careful during walks as sudden, loud noises can spook your dog. Make sure your dog is microchipped and your information is up-to-date. Consider a GPS Tracker for your dog collar, like an Apple Airtag Holder just for dog collars (check those out here on Amazon)

🐾 If your dog takes medications for anxiety, make sure those are filled and check with your veterinarian for the best dosage/schedule during the holiday

🐾 If you’re hosting a party, make sure you keep all the fun for the humans and away from the dogs (i.e. alcohol and snacks) so you can spend New Year’s Day at home and not with your veterinarian

🐾 Make sure your pup has a cozy place to hang out during the festivities, maybe snuggled up with you and a yummy pig snout?!

To help your pup become a “pro” at fireworks before the New Year’s Eve festivities begin, we suggest starting the following routine:

🐾 Find a fireworks video on YouTube and play it on a low volume while your dog eats dinner. We want your pup to associate the fireworks with one of their favorite things, FOOD! Make it fun and feed them dinner in a puzzle toy or a snuffle mat!

🐾 At each meal, steadily increase the volume of those fireworks until it sounds like New Year’s Eve in your living room. This should not be stressful, so increase the volume at a pace perfect for your dog!

🐾 Play music or background noise throughout the nights leading up to and after New Year’s Eve to help with any anxiety stemming from any fireworks those pesky neighbors might be setting off

Start preparing now for a stress-free New Year’s Eve, and we can’t wait to see you in the new year! Life can be ruff, but training your dog doesn’t have to be!
